How To Move a Safe?

Caution: If you do not have experience moving items that are as heavy as the safe you are about to purchase or have purchased we recommend that you have a professional safe mover handle this project for you.

Should you wish to move the safe yourself please have the following safe moving equipment and/or tools that will make the job easier and safer:

  • 6 - Thick moving blankets (Can be rented at UHaul or most any tool rental store).
  • Pallet Jack having a 5,000 lb capacity, or a Refrigerator Dolly if the safe is under 500 lbs. (Can be rented at most any tool rental store).
  • 4 - 1/8" thick x 2' x 4' solid aluminum or steel plates
  • Two strong assistants that will follow your instructions

Please note: Most safe companies provide "Curbside Delivery" where the truck driver unloads the safe curbside in front of your residence or business. You will then be responsible to move the safe up your driveway and/or into your garage or premises.

When moving a safe Into your garage - use the pallet jack or refrigerator dolly (weight permitting). If the driveway has an uneven surface place the aluminum or steel plates in front of the safe and push the safe (on the pallet) onto the plate to avoid going over an uneven surface and potentially having an accident. Plates can be doubled or staggered to create no more than a 1/2" ramp to get over the threshhold into the garage.

Move the safe to within 6 to 8 feet of its permanent location.

To remove the safe (that is on the pallet or dolly) carefully push the safe from the lower 1/3 part of the safe while removing the dolly.

To unbolting your safe from the pallet you should have the following tools:

  • Phillips head scewdriver
  • Vice grips.
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • A socket set with a rachet.

First, remove all side shelves and then the vertical centerboard inside the safe. These components will be in the way when you unbolt the safe from the pallet and when you are installing the anchor bolts.  All components can be easily reinstalled once the safe has been set in place and anchored to the floor.

Next, see if you have 1, 2 or 4 anchor holes. There will be small black covers where the bolts are located. Removing each black cover will expose each of the holes. You probably will not be able to reach around the safe to get to and hold the bolts. Your vice grip pliers will be used to hold the nuts that must be unscrewed. Loosen up your screw inside the safe then go to the back of the safe and grab the nut underneath the safe with your vice grips. Go back inside and completely unscrew the bolt. When the vice grips hit the floor, you have completely unscewed the bolt.

To remove the safe (that weighs up to about 800 lbs) from the pallet you will need walk the safe from corner to corner, or side to side until the back of the safe is no more than 30% off the pallet. At this point you should tip the safe (while the two assistants are steadying the safe from the BACK of the safe) until the back of the safe touches the ground. Then tip the safe back just a few more degrees until you reach the point where the pallet can be extracted from underneath the safe.

Push the safe into its permanent location. The garage floor should be concrete. You will need the following tools to drill the hole in the concrete and install the anchor bolts:

  • 1/2" Chuck Hammer Drill
  • 7/16" x 12" Carbide tipped Drill bits (for cement)
  • Impact Gun - 1/2" drive
  • 3/4" Deep Socket

Before bolting down your safe....Make certain your safe is level.. To do so, open the safe door to four different locations. (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and fully open) to make certain there is no movement of the door when not being held. If there is no movement your safe should be level. If the door is moving on its own than you will need to place shims under the safe body in order to level the safe.

We always recommend that an experience safe mover perform this task for you.
