Biden on gun control

Biden has recently announced his proposed new legislation on gun control

President Joe Biden has recently announced his proposed new legislation on gun control in the United States, aiming to address the gun violence epidemic that continues to plague the nation. The proposed measures are expected to be the most comprehensive and far-reaching efforts towards gun control in decades, with a focus on closing loopholes in the current system, expanding background checks, and banning assault weapons; the misconception is that the definition of an assault weapon is one that can go from semi-automatic to fully automatic. These firearms are not sold to the public at large, and here is where we also have differences in opinion knowing full well what the real definition is of an assault weapon. He also addresses the elimination of high-capacity magazines.

One of the key aspects of the proposed legislation is the expansion of background checks. Currently, federal law only requires background checks for gun purchases made through licensed dealers, leaving a significant loophole for private sales and gun shows. The proposed legislation aims to close this loophole by requiring background checks for all gun sales, including those made through unlicensed dealers and at gun shows. This measure is expected to prevent individuals with a history of domestic violence, mental illness, or criminal records from obtaining firearms, making it harder for guns to end up in the wrong hands.

Another critical element of the proposed legislation is the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The proposed ban will cover a wide range of semi-automatic rifles and pistols that have been used in many of the recent mass shootings in the United States. The only issue with respect to this is… what’s to stop a criminal or a mentally unstable person from using multiple firearms and achieving the same results. The legislation also aims to restrict the sale and possession of high-capacity magazines, which have been used to increase the lethality of these weapons. This ban is expected to make it harder for individuals to obtain and use weapons that can cause significant harm in a short amount of time.

The proposed legislation has received mixed reactions from various groups, including gun rights advocates and gun control activists. Those opposed to the proposed measures argue that they infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens and will not effectively address the issue of gun violence. They also argue that criminals will continue to obtain firearms regardless of any new legislation, and in addition to that they can have ten thousand new laws on the books and the ones that don't follow the law that would do as they want. Laws are followed by law abiding citizens only! This will only burden law-abiding citizens who wish to purchase guns for self-defense or recreational purposes. The states and cities that have the toughest gun control are the ones that are experiencing the highest number of gun related crimes. Gun crimes can really happen anywhere or at any time. What stops a would-be perpetrator? … it’s a good guy with a gun, whether a law enforcement officer or an ordinary citizen.
